Garden City is once again celebrating the final leg of the Triple Crown on Friday, June 8 – the eve of the 144th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.
The Garden City Belmont Festival will take place on Seventh Street from 6 to 10 p.m. and will feature dance groups, live music, family-friendly activities and a “Wing Off” chicken wing competition. Bands scheduled to perform include the Fivestone, Jerry & the Newcomers, The New Vintage Orchestra, Speak Easy and The Village Music Makers. Dances will be performed by Garden City’s Broadway Bound Dance Center and Step Dancers from the Fitzpatrick Academy of Irish Dancers.
The Wing Off will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. during which local restaurants will compete to be named Garden City’s chicken wing champion. Seven restaurants are currently confirmed to take part in the competition: Rein at the Garden City Hotel; Walk Street; J.P. McGeevers; Lani’s Marketplace; Pop’s Wings; Famous Dave’s and Murphy’s Bar and Grill. The winner will be announced at 9:30 p.m.
The general public will judge the contest as any passerby can get in on the action for a minimum donation of $5, which includes a plate of wings and a ballot. All proceeds benefit Nassau County Firefighter’s Operation Wounded Warrior project, which provides needed items for injured United States military personnel.
Local restaurants wishing to participate should contact Tim Peeples at 917-747-3067.
The evening festival will include a poster contest, face painters and pony rides, plus carnival booths with prizes and a wide variety of food offerings.
The Garden City Belmont Festival is sponsored by The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) and The Garden City Hotel.
