LEADING OWNER KENNETH AND SARAH RAMSEY; KEN RAMSEY: “Saratoga is competitive. It’s like dreaming. A dream, to me, is a goal with a certain finish line. My dream was to win the owner’s title at Saratoga because I have never won it before. I got all of my trainers together and said, `Look, boys. Here’s the goal; here’s what we are going for.’ I’ve got four of the most promising and upcoming trainers (Charlton Baker, Wesley Ward, Chad Brown, and Michael Maker) who could be the next D. Wayne Lukas, Bobby Frankel, or Nick Zito. I had a great meet. My hat is off to all of my trainers and the jockeys who rode for us. My wife (Sarah) and I are thankful."
LEADING TRAINER KIARAN McLAUGHLIN, (17 wins; first Saratoga training title): “In American racing, it’s just fabulous to win at Saratoga where everybody is watching and everybody wants to win. We’ve had a great meet. Alan (Garcia, jockey) has had a great meet. Todd (Pletcher, runner-up in trainer standings) had a great meet. I did expect to do well. We have a lot of nice horses up here and a lot of great owners, and it worked out well. The two-year-olds, obviously, helped us out. The high point for us was winning the Grade 2 races (with Abraaj in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap and Shakis in the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap). “Lucky Island (stumbled at the break in the Grade 1 Forego) was a disappointment. That’s going to happen. We (Todd and I) always pull for each other. A lot of guys want to knock the other guy out, but Todd and I are always close. “It’s a good thing the meet to go on another week, or John Kimmel would have won (Kimmel saddled seven consecutive winners; the streak ended when Break Water Edison ran fourth in the Three Chimneys Hopeful).”
LEADING JOCKEY ALAN GARCIA (39 wins, first Saratoga riding title): “It’s good for my career right now. There are a lot of good young riders here. I am so proud of being leading jockey at Saratoga, and I am thankful for everyone that gave me the opportunity.” |
